Both teams were strong on the mound Wednesday, but Farragut defeated Athens 3-1. Admiral pitchers Owen Kovacs and Landon Smiddy handcuffed the Athens hitters the whole game, allowing just one hit.
The Admirals future in the Gulf Shores Classic Tournament will be determined later today. We will update the website as soon as we know if and when the Admirals advance to the Championship round.
Farragut grabbed an early lead, scoring on a double by Jake Hagenow in the first inning and a bases-loaded RBI walk by Parker Noland in the second inning.
Owen Kovacs earned the win for Farragut. He went 6 innings, surrendering 1 run, throwing a one-hitter, struck out 5, and walked only one. Landon Smiddy pitched the 7th, earning the save, with 2 Ks.
Carson Wright, Justen Freeman, Chandler Chambers, Hagenow, and Brad Grenkoski accumulated the 5-hit total for the Admirals.
Whether the Admirals advance in the tournament is determined by game results in the 40-team tournament. Undefeated teams with the least runs allowed are advanced to Thursday’s championship round.
