Just what kind of baseball career Patrick Raby will have at Farragut High School is uncertain.

But the freshman got it going in the right direction during the first week of the season.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-hander threw six innings of no-hit ball in an 8-0 win against Soddy-Daisy last Thursday in the Scenic City Classic in Chattanooga.

Raby exited in the seventh after putting two runners on base.

Soddy-Daisy won 27 games last season and was a participant in the Class AAA state tournament.

Raby, 14, struck out 12 Soddy-Daisy batters — on their home field — in six innings for the Admirals (5-0), the four-time defending Class AAA state champions.

Raby’s fastball clocked in the mid-to-upper 80s during the game, said Farragut coach Matt Buckner.

“He was pretty impressive. He’s a pretty impressive young kid,” said Buckner. “There have been a couple of scrimmages where he’d been fairly dominant.

“I didn’t know he’d do that (in his first start). But I’m not surprised that he was successful. He’s got a chance to be pretty elite on the mound.”

Buckner sent Raby back out to start the seventh, but Raby hit a batter and walked another. That prompted his exit. Jordan Newby preserved the shutout but did allow a hit.

“I talked to (Raby) after the sixth, and he was like, ‘Come on. Let me pitch this,’ ” said Buckner. “I said, ‘You let anybody on, I’m bringing you out of the game.’ It’s early in the season. He’s 14 years old.

“If he didn’t have a no-hitter, I wouldn’t have put him back out there anyway. He was pretty impressive. I’m not sure (Soddy-Daisy) squared many balls up.”

A pair of 5-11, left-handed Farragut freshmen pitchers, Shane Mosiello and Eric Lessig, also recorded wins over Father Ryan and Station Camp, respectively, in the Scenic City Classic. Mosiello is the eldest child of Tennessee assistant baseball coach Bill Mosiello.

Farragut is playing at a tournament in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., this week.

Raby is scheduled to pitch Wednesday against Niceville, a Class 6A program from Florida.
